ANNUAL Ten Days of Solstice 2008 6/20 - 6/29

2008-06-20
Ten Days of Solstice Alaska

Alyeska Site Description and Requirements

Schedule of Events (pending)

Prizes:

Since the prize list will continue to grow until the start of the fly-in, you can expect great items from Flytec, Super Fly, Midnight Sun Paragliding and more.

Visiting pilots are encouraged to check into the Prince Hotel at the Alyeska tram base for the finest lodging and closest proximity to the flying. Space is limited however and many days are already booked.
Alternatively, you may find ample accommodations at Alyeska Accommodations or Girdwood Accommodations. There are no campgrounds within ten miles of Girdwood.

For those on a budget, a hostel/shared housing is located about 15 minutes walk from the tram base. It’s a fine little guesthouse with a rustic Alaska-style sauna out back and 360 views of Alyeska and the surrounding mountains. Contact Alyeska Hostel for reservations.

Transportation

Eagle River Shuttle service will take you to Girdwood from the airport for $65 for one person and $10 per person additional (up to four). This is cheaper than a taxi and probably more pleasant! Please call John at (907) 764-4003 or 338-8888 at least 48 hours in advance with your flight information.

Alternatively The Shuttle Man offers the same service for $75/person plus $10 additional. Call Steve at (907) 677-8537 or e-mail at elvisonline@gci.net
Once in Girdwood you may walk to most areas around town or catch a lift with other pilots. If you need a rental car we recommend arranging the best fare through Travelocity.

Requirements

All pilots are required to receive an orientation to fly at Alyeska. USHGA P2 minimum with 75 flights logged at no less than 5 sites. Arctic Air Walkers membership is also required. See the Alyeska Site description for further details.

Cost

The fly-in: $50 for the Alyeska-based events. This includes a stylish, long sleeve t-shirt, eligibility for contest prizes, barbeque, AAW membership, door prize tickets, and a frothy beverage Friday night.
Alyeska tram passes: $16/day or a special $110 for Solstice Fly-In Paraglider Pass (Good for 2 days before and after the event). The price for a season pass is $250.
Arctic Air Walkers membership: Annual membeship included in $50 fee
(no day rate, sorry).
The helicopter to the 6000-ft Eagle Glacier (optional, but great fun!) is based on an hourly rate, expect about $100 per person.

Also great fun, the optional Safety Clinic is $600 for three full days. With ample towing until the wee-hours and top-notch instruction from Chris Santacroce it is quite a bargain! Contact Phil Smith at Midnight Sun Paragliding, LLC for registration.
